American Canyon is located in the southern part of Napa County, bordering Vallejo California which is in Solano County. It can be reached from American Canyon Road and highway 37 off interstate 80, or off highway 29, 101 and 37 when traveling from the north and northeast. American Canyon is located on highway 29 just north of Vallejo and the world famous Six Flags Marine World. When American Canyon wanted more local control, setting up its own city made the most sense. American Canyon is Napa Valley's newest city and one of the fastest growing Bay Area Cities as well. By plan and design a green belt surrounds much of the city. A 500-acre wetlands preserve and the Napa River to the west, the 640-acre Jack & Bernice Newell Wilderness Preserve to the east; in the northeast are beautiful vineyard covered hills at the foot of the Sulphur Springs Mountains.
American Canyon is wisely seeking businesses that provide services to improve of the quality of life in for its citizens. American Canyon incorporated in 1992 having the second largest city population in the Napa Valley, with 9,217 citizens, surpassed only by The City of Napa. American Canyon spent several years planning and setting up its government infrastructure and in 1995 it adopted a general plan to guide growth. As of 2008, the population was 15,276, up sharply from the original population of 9,217. American Canyon recently annexed 350 acres of industrially zoned property on the north side of Green Island Road. Another 70 acres is expected to be approved in the future that will allow development of a “Town Center” on the eastern side of the city.
The goal of the City, pursuant to its General Plan, is to provide a sufficient range of uses to support its growing population. The City plans to be a center of employment and commerce for this region of the Bay Area. From the results we can see that American Canyon is well on its way to accomplishing its stated goals.
