About Rio Vista, California:
The City of Rio Vista is a special place with an inviting mix of rural and suburban lifestyles and easy access to all of the urban amenities associated with two of the nation’s most dynamic metropolitan regions, San Francisco and Sacramento. Rio Vita lies on the banks of the Sacramento River and is within an easy drive to the Napa Wine Country, Sierra ski resorts and Lake Tahoe. Located between Interstate-80 and Interstate-5… if you have ever considered a scenic route to Sacramento take Hwy 160 or State Route 84 and you’ll encounter one of the State of California’s most beautiful drives winding its way through the Delta’s levees leading to the State Capitol.
Rio Vista is proud to host the oldest fishing derby on the West Coast. The festival began in 1933 strictly as a one-day fishing derby for striped bass. Today however, the festival has become a three-day derby for bass, catfish and sturgeon. The festival also boasts music, food and fun for fishermen and non-fishing children and adults as well. The events include a carnival, live music and dancing, classic car show, a pancake breakfast, parade and BBQ. A large fireworks display is also featured on Saturday night. This event is always held the second weekend in October.
Rio Vista became world famous through Humphrey, the humpback whale who decided to visit the city in 1985. What made Humphrey so special is he lives in the open sea, (salt water) he wasn’t supposed to be in fresh water, traveling 3 miles up the slough to Rio Vista. Hundreds of visitors and reporters flocked to Rio Vista to catch a glimpse of Humphrey as scientist and naturalist tried to turn Humphrey around and lead him to the open waters of the Pacific Ocean. On November 4th 1985 at 4:30 PM Humphrey left Rio Vista and a slew of townspeople, visitors, scientist and reporters and headed for the open sea.
Considered to be the hub of the Delta, Rio Vista is the focal point for many of the Delta communities with many shops, restaurants, waterfront dining, auto dealers, banks, marinas, a medical center, recreational parks and campgrounds. Rich in California history having connections to the Pony Express, and the Gold Rush era, Rio Vista is a sleepy delta town. When the Mexican government signed over California to the United States in 1848 Colonel N.H. Davis bought land for $2,000 on December 3rd 1855. In 1857 Colonel Davis had chosen a site for a town one mile below the mouth of Cache Slough. Davis named the town Los Brozos Del Rio, “The Arms of the River” because the Sacramento River Forms at the town’s location. In 1858 Colonel Davis was the first to build a home in the new town. In 1860 the name of the town was changed from Los Brozos Del Rio to Rio Vista, or “Riverview”.
Rio Vista was incorporated on December 30th 1893. The cities current population is estimated at a little over 7000 people in a 7.5 square mile area. Rio Vista has plenty of room for growth with only 25% of the city having been developed. It is estimated that Rio Vista will triple within the next 15 years, with almost half of the residential growth being lead by “Trilogy” an active senior development. Trilogy will account for 1500 homes or more in the next 15 years. Along with new families comes the need for business and services. Rio Vista has enjoyed a steady growth of new businesses over the past years without the big box look and feel. Rio Vista is home to many of the green companies, including wind energy and natural gas. Located 20 minutes from Fairfield, Vacaville, Lodi, and Antioch it takes little effort to make Rio Vista your home or a destination.
