About Vallejo, California:
Welcome To Vallejo: Vallejo’s story begins with General Mariano G. Vallejo, who saw the promise of this area in 1844. Named after him and twice the site of the state capital in the 1850’s, Vallejo grew into an important shipping and naval center. Prosperity attracted other businesses: A tannery, three breweries, hotels, a cigar factory, a carriage plant, an ice cream plant creamery and the Sperry Mills Flour Plant that is still in operation.
While much of the cities history is steeped in the legacy of Gen. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who helped settle the area he discovered in 1844, it’s true the future that seems the brightest for this city of more than 120,000 residents, which the New York Times once called one of the most diverse cities in the United States. A much anticipated project which begun in the late 2006 is transforming on of the last undeveloped waterfront areas in the Bay Area into an eclectic collection of shops, restaurants, homes, office space, hotels and other attractions.
Meanwhile, a downtown revitalization is in progress, which has as its centerpiece the Empress Theatre; an early 1900s destination in the Beaux Arts Style along with mixed use retail outlets and a variety of amenities. With these new attractions, Vallejo boast its own 76 year old symphony, one of the oldest in the state, and a major theme park, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, which attracts 2 million visitors a year to the city. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is the only combination theme park, oceanarium and land animal park in the world. The park is located 30 miles northeast of San Francisco in Vallejo, California. Primary markets include San Francisco, Sacramento and Northern California. Add in a collection of world class golf courses, a flourishing year round farmers market, annual events such as the Solano County Fair and the Northern California Pirate Festival, and the city’s close proximity to Northern California’s wine country and you’ll see why Vallejo has become a major destination for Solano County visitors and residence.
In many ways, the history of Vallejo has been defined by its location, its strategic proximity to the water.
Today, Vallejo’s past is very much a part of its present. Mare Island Naval Shipyard, established in 1854, was the west coast first shipyard. For nearly a century and a half, Mare Island Naval Ship Yard, the oldest shipyard west of the Mississippi, served as one of the nation’s most important military installations. Mare Island remains an important community asset for economic development opportunities despite its closure by the U.S. Navy. But that’s just the begging of the story, When the shipyard closed in 1996 implementation of a nationally recognized reuse plan began, with the goal of making Mare Island and Vallejo the newest destination in Solano County and the entire Bay Area. Helping to maintain the city’s ties to the water, a ferry service considered a model of vision and successful operation serves hundreds of thousands of passengers traveling to and from Vallejo and the rest of the Bay Area every year. This constant flow of commuters and visitors has helped spread the word about Vallejo’s reputation as a strategically located city with affordable housing choices that include numerous historic and architecturally beautiful homes. The City of Vallejo, in conjunction with private developers, has exciting plans for the three mile long island. Industrial, educational, recreational, residential and historical areas are being planned for the “New” Mare Island which will evolve in the coming years. Despite its change in use over the next few years, Mare Island will continue to serve Vallejo and the surrounding area in a variety of different ways. Mare Island will be remembered always as an important place in the history and defense of our nation.
